What constitutes Ragging:

Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts as listed in the above mentioned UGC regulation:

  • any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student;
  • indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities by any student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student;
  • asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other studen
  • any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher;
  • exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students.
  • any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student by students;
  • any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health or person;
  • any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, post, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student;
  • any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.

Action Taken by the University

  • The University has been educating/ updating the students and their parents enrolled in various programmes in the University by writing letters to the parents before the beginning of an academic session since 2008-09. This has helped us as is evident from the fact that no case of raging was reported during the year 2008-09.
  • In the Prospectus for Admission published by the University it is clearly stipulated that in case the applicant for admission is found indulged in ragging he/ she may be expelled from the University. The University website is also running an anti ragging campaign since 2008-09. In addition to this if it is noticed that any student has been indulged in ragging in past, admission may be refused to such students.
  • Formation of Committees and Squads: Complying with the directives of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, the University has formed the following Anti-Ragging Committee and squad for overseeing the implementation of the provisions of the verdict with immediate effect:
  • Undertaking from Students and Parents: Each of the student of the University and his/her parents or Guardian are hereby required to submit separate undertakings in the form of an affidavit at the time admission/ registration, in the format prescribed by UGC as attached to this office order, which is mandatory for admission/ registration.
  • The University level Anti-Ragging Committee and squad shall work to oversee the implementation of the recommendations in tune with the UGC regulation passed vide no. F.1-11/2008
