I am delighted to know that Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is re-launching its website to keep the students and their guardians around the country abreast with the academic achievements and serene environment of the university. This, I believe, will immensely benefit students desirous to pursue technical and professional education in this temple of learning, which is all set to achieve even higher academic excellence in years to come. We have already traversed a long way, yet many milestones are still to be covered. Given the commitment and devotion of the Vice Chancellor, Faculty, Staff and Students, the day is not far when our vision of making this a world-class institution worthy of being associated with the name of Mata, will be accomplished.

Vice Chancellor's Message

Vice-Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) was established by ‘Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’ through the SMVD University Act of J&K Legislative Assembly in 1999. This fully residential university started teaching programs in 2004 and is situated just about 14 kms from the holy town of Katra in the Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. The university campus with an area of about 400 acres is located on the Katra-Srinagar road in the beautiful surroundings of the hills – one side being the Trikuta hills well known for the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. The university has excellent infrastructure and provides semi-furnished accommodation to all the faculty members as well as staff members in the campus.

SMVDU endeavors to provide excellent education to the students through undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs so as to create finest professionals and human beings. At present, the university offers B.Tech. degree in the fields of Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Industrial Bio-technology, and B.Arch. degree. The postgraduate and doctoral programs are offered in all these areas of technology as well as in select sciences, humanities and social sciences viz. Physics, Bio-technology, Mathematics, Management (for MBA degree), Philosophy and English. SMVDU is one of the fastest growing young universities of India, attracting students from more than 22 States of the country. The university has a modern world-class auditorium with seating capacity of 1000. All classrooms are fitted with LCD/DLP projectors. Smart boards are available in the Schools (Departments).

SMVDU (campus) was inaugurated by Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Hon’ble President of India in 2004. The university had the privilege of having Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh and Hon’ble President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil as the Chief Guest for the Convocation in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Shri N.R.Narayana Murthy addressed the Convocation as the Chief Guest in 2009. The guiding spirit of the university is our Chancellor Shri N. N. Vohra, the Chairman of SMVD Shrine Board and Hon’ble Governor of Jammu & Kashmir State.

The SMVDU campus is safe and picturesque. After the sun-set, in the north of the campus, one can see the beautiful well-lit path that has non-stop movement of pilgrims 24 hours a day and 365 days in the year going for ‘Mata Darshan’. The number of pilgrims crossed the landmark figure of one crore (10 million) in 2011. The impact of positive vibes of the Trikuta hills shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, which is seen on one side of the campus, is visible in the courteous behavior of the campus community – be it the staff or faculty or the students. The campus living is quite familial in nature. I believe that each member of SMVDU family feels privileged to be here. I welcome all distinguished professionals and young bright students to be a part of the growing SMVDU family.

The Executive Council

The Executive Council is the executive body of the University and is in charge of the general management and administration of the University.
