Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University was established under an Act of the J&K State Legislatuer in 1999 as an Autonomous, Technical & fully Residential University.  The University is recognized by UGC (University Grants Commission) under Section 2(f) & 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956.  This enables the University to received funds from UGC.

The University is divided into four Colleges or Faculties of Study.  Each College has Schools of Study as it's constituents analogous to Departments ina traditional universities.  The Dean is the Head of a College while a Director is the Head of a School.  The Academic Structure of the University is best illustrated by the above diagram.
